Trace and Claim a Missing Safe Deposit Box

A safe deposit box is considered legally unclaimed and abandoned when there has been no contact with the owner or heir and the lease has expired, with no further rental payments made.

This often happens after the untimely death of a family member, following name changes after marriage or divorce, and after the expiration of a mail forwarding order after a move.

Did a deceased family member have a safe deposit box at a depository that moved, changed its name or closed? Don’t assume that because your bank, savings and loan or credit union no longer exists that box contents are lost forever. The box may have been transferred to another bank, or to a government custodian after a merger or acquisition. To trace a missing or unclaimed safe deposit box complete the form below.
